Why is it that after having a fight with my wife and storming out, I'm sitting on the couch at 3 am, scrolling through Instagram? Many people find themselves in the same situation. This comes from a desire to escape but most of us can't seem to figure out how. Of course, what's stopping us from trying the absolute best ways to de-stress and relax your mind is our addiction—to social media. Social media has become an extension of our everyday lives and we've even forgotten how much time we spend on it. Whenever we're done with our day and just want to relax, we don't read a book or play a board game. Instead, we get on our laptops and smartphones and use social media to relax. In college, when I was getting ready for the next day's classes or when I was bored at home, which were both much more frequent in my years as a college student, I would find myself spending much more time on social media. The night before an exam not studying? Spending too long on Facebook. Waiting at the airport for a flight? Browsing Instagram. Since social media is an addiction, we find ourselves in a feedback loop that keeps us coming back. Doing it seems like a good use of our time and the dopamine-filled rewards give us a quick satisfaction that we often mistake for happiness. But after reading multiple research papers on the effects of social media on human behavior, I've realized how huge the negative effect of social media is on my stress levels and mental health. Now, don't get me wrong. I love using social media to stay connected with friends and family members who live far away from me. I also think that it's amazing how social media has allowed people who felt excluded in everyday life to connect with other people who share their interests and passions. Back when I was in school, I realized that my friends and I were just trying to express ourselves through phones and tablets that were available back then. Social media helped us do this by giving us a place where we could share with the world how funny we were and how great we looked. Choose what is right for you: There's no right or wrong way to use social media—as long as you're not hurting yourself physically or mentally. Use it as a way to express your interests, and if it can help you stay in touch with friends and family members, go ahead and use it. Just remember that social media is here to serve your needs, not the other way around. It's time to take action. Learn what you can do to cut down on your time on social media so you can use it for the things that are most important. Limit yourself: Instead of scrolling through 10 minutes of Instagram, set a timer for 5 minutes so you don't feel obligated to check it regularly. At least try it out—you'll be surprised at how much more productive this will make your time spent away from social media. Delete unused apps: There are several apps that automatically refresh the feed with new content or push notifications, but they can waste huge chunks of your day if not used regularly. cfa1e77820
